Does a Home Theatre System need an amp?
-
I found on the internet a Home Theatre System that is selling on ebay, surround sound system, 5 speakers and a sub. It does not come with an amp, is one needed for it to work well?

Answer:
Based on your description yes you need an AVR (Audio Video Receiver). While there are pre-packaged deals put together by reputable speaker manufacturers, generally it is better to avoid "systems". You're going to get better quality and flexibility by buying components individually. Choose a nice receiver by Denon, Onkyo or a few others then choose main speakers, the center speaker and the surrounds. The subwoofer will likely be a different brand from the other speakers. Avoid well known Japanese brands when it comes to speakers. While Sony might make a nice TV, they don't make good speakers. Most of the better speakers will be brand names you have never heard of and will not be available from Best Buy, Frys, or similar stores. You should look for audio video shops in your area and go listen to speakers. The sound character varies significantly and it will be up to you to choose what you like. I would definitely be very skeptical of a package "theatre system" found on ebay. mk

If it is a "Home Theater System" then that means that it has an amplifier included, which is nice. Unfortunately, it also means that it is a piece of crap with poor quality sound that will more than likely start to malfunction before the warranty is even up, which is a pain in the butt. My recommendation: Stay as far away from "home theater systems" as possible. If it uses that phrase, then it's not worth the cardboard box it comes in.

If it is not a Home Theater in Box ( DVD player with amp built-in ) then the answer is yes.

Home theater in a box is a complete system, you do not need an amp. The only thing wrong about them is when one item fails you need to replace the whole system, beside that you have no room for any up grade. It is not flexible for adding other equipment to the system. You get what you pay for. My recommendation is an Onkyo HT-S model, it is a 7.1 receiver and a set of 7.1 speakers and it is very flexible for adding or upgrade. Hope this will help you out.

sepakers can not work without power, you will need either a amp for 2 channel or a av reciever for 5.1/7.1 audio
