How to connect my sound system into TV?

How do I connect my tv to a surround sound system?

  • I have a new tv with terrible sound. I do however have surround sound on my dvd player. The dvd player is connected to a surround sound system via multiple leads (5 or so). The dvd has a built in decoder. It has a space in the back for digital audio (coaxial), but I'm not sure if it's input or output? My tv has the same connection (coaxial also), again not sure if it's input or output. If I was to connect a coaxial spdif cable between these two connections, is there a chance I could send my tv sound to my speakers. I mainly watch digital tv with a digital box, but that only has a toslink digital output. Do

You only need to connect a video cable to your TV. Let the DVD/Surround system do the audio. I don't really like those combined DVD/Surround systems because they lack the audio inputs that a normal AV receiver has. Anyways, if you're using a DTV converter, you can simply take the yellow cable and leave it connected to your TV (that's the video cable) Then take the red/white cables and connect them to your DVD/Surround system...assuming it has any inputs. Most TV channels (even digital and HD ones) are only broadcasting in stereo anyways, so you're not missing anything.
