Help hooking surround sound up to Xbox 360?

I have been trying to hook my Xbox 360 up to my surround sound player, the player is a PANASONIC Blu ray player with surround sound speakers. I have a digital optic cable and two HDMI cables. i currently have the optic cable hooked in from the xbox to the surround sound system. the xbox Still plays sound through my tv. i have googled this several times and tried several different things and i cannot figure it out. please help.

Are you sure that it is an optical input and not an output? It has to say optical IN. If it does then it should work. All you have to do is mute the TV

You have to configure your XBOX to output the video via HDMI cable and the the audio via optical. Or you can connect the whole thing to the tv and then connect an optical audio from the tv to the sound system. Hope this will help you out.
