For your current setup, I assume you are getting sound on the TV as well? If so, what is probably happening is since the HDMI connection is smart enough to know what it is talking to (ie a TV) it knows it can only handle a Stereo signal. Since it is output stereo to the tv the player is probably also limiting the toslink output to stereo as well. To make it output the full 5.1 then you will have to look for an option in the BR player that sets the HDMI out to Video only. Then see what happens with the receiver. As for the weird speaker output, check what Surround mode the receiver is in. Since it looks like it is only getting a stereo signal make sure it is set to Stereo and hopefully you will get output to the main speakers and solve that mystery. As for how to wire thing up in the first place. Since your reciever is HDMI capable, you are technically better off running the output of the player to the hdmi input of the receiver. Then running the output of the receiver to the hdmi input of the TV. What should happen is the receiver will "grab" the audio from the hdmi input stream and route the video to the tv via its HDMI output. This is better because HDMI is capable is HD audio (like DTS HD Master and Dolby True HD) while toslink will only get you up to Dolby Digital and DTS which are compressed non-hd. BUT, the disadvantage is you woulld need to have the receiver on when you want to watch Bluray since most receivers will not continue to send the signal when they are turned off (they are very few that do this right now). Dont know if that presents a problem to your uncle or not - some people like to be able to watch with or without the receiver. The other thing you have to consider is if you want 3D AND the receiver is not capable of passing a 3D signal or not. You have to check the specs on that. If it cannot and you want 3D then have to go with HDMI direct to the TV. Ernie

Make sure the TV is set to output 5.1 out the optical port. Make sure the Yamaha is set to "Auto Detect" the inputs from the TV. (Optical can carry either 2-channel stereo from a CD player or 5.1 so you sometimes have to specify this) Try using the built-in test-tone feature on the Yamaha to make sure all speakers are defined and working. Some of the DSP modes let you use just 2 speakers but you want the Yamaha to use all 5. Watch the display as it moves sound around to each speaker. If some speakers are missing during the test-tones, then the Yamaha thinks they are not present. Hope this helps.
