I have a 12 inch speaker, can i make it into a subwoofer for my house.

Answer:
That depends on the 12" speaker, not all speakers are intended to be used for any particular frequency band. If it's something like a guitar speaker then no, it would not make a good subwoofer. There are parameters you need to know in order to know if this 12" speaker will work as a subwoofer. The most important ones are: Fs (resonance frequency); Qts (total damping factor); Vas (Equivalent volume). You would also want to know Xmax to know if it can move enough air to be an effective subwoofer. You can't just put it in any box, the box requirements will depend on the values of the parameters above. Sealed box systems are pretty easy to design and if you know anything at all about what you are doing then they are pretty hard to screw up. If you don't know the Thiele/Small parameters of your speaker then you need to find them or you need to measure them. You can buy a device to measure them... http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=390-803 ($99). If you really want to build your own subwoofer instead of buying one... and this is a really good idea because you can get far better quality than any of the crap they sell in places like Best Buy, you should consider buying a kit. http://www.parts-express.com/wizards/searchResults.cfm?srchExt=CAT&srchCat=536 Unless you spend a lot of money on it, commercial subwoofers are pretty bad. The mass market stuff is just worthless! If you don't mind spending $2000 on an SVS http://www.svsound.com/subwoofers/ported-box/pb13-ultra?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=12&category_id=7 then just do that, otherwise you're way better off building your own. Actually you're still better off building your own because you can match or exceed the SVS quality for less money pretty easy. Yes, you can. But I would look at the frequency that the speaker you are going to use to make sure it has the required frequency. Also you are going to need a power amplifier if you are making a subwoofer. Building your own subwoofer would not be cost effective than just buying one at a retail store. There is more to it than just putting a speaker in a box, to make a subwoofer. Hope this will help you out.
