How do I get sound HDMI to DVI?

Do you get sound on a hdmi to dvi-d cable?

  • i have a hd tv which has only a DVI-D input ( no hdmi ) my son has a playstation 3 which has the hdmi socket. i have been told the converter cable will not send sound to the tv.. do you know if this is correct.

  • Answer:

This is correct. DVI stands for Digital Visual Interface. So, all you get is video. You need audio connections as well to get the sound.

the HDMI is for video only you will also need to connect RCA cables or digital audio cable for sound

The PS3 allows you to send Video out of the HDMI output, which you can then convert to DVI via a little adapter. You can output the audio via the standard PS3 multiout, and plug the connectors into the audio-in near the DVI input of the telly. If it doesnt have an audio in that works with the DVI slot (like PC monitors dont), then you will have to get a surround system and use that instead. The PS3 will only allow video out of one socket and audio out of one socket, but these dont have to be the same as each other.

The Drunken Fool

DVI does not support sound, only video. HDMI supports audio and video. The answer to your question is "no". In your setup, you would need an optical audio cable to a surround sound system. Or use stereo RCA cables directly to your TV.
