Netflix Streaming still possible with weak wireless signal? what's the minimum speed?

Very low Mbps while streaming Netflix on Blu-Ray??!!??!!?

  • Right to the chase, have a very new Cisco router, Surfboard modem, 2mo old Sony Blu-Ray (connected to router via Ethernet cable), and Performance (15 Mbps +/-) Comcast internet. Sounds reasonable, however, whenever we stream movies through the Sony Blu-Ray the Mbps drops so low(as it kindly displays on the screen) down to 0.5 to 1.5 Mbps, which of course stops the movie (or Burn Notice season 2 as it happened to be today) for an unreasonable amount of time. So.. I ran speed tests on 2 different sites right while this was happening and 1 (speedtest.com) said 10+ Mpbs and the 2nd (comcast.com) said "of course" 18 Mbps ...yeah right. And also...we got annoyed enough to switch to the Wii Streaming Netflix (which is wireless) and had no further problems, with the exception of much poorer picture quality. Any one know why this would happen??? Bad Ethernet cable??? Bad port on router?? I don't know!!

  • Answer:

All Sony Blu-Ray players, except the PS3, direct data through Sony's servers. This is where the problem lies. You might remember having to set some things up on Sony's site before you could use Netflix. I have the BDP-S580, and I have seen it slow down considerably while my PS3 continues to get 10+ Mbps. You can call Sony to complain, but that's about all you can do short of switching to another Netflix ready device.
