How do I hook up my VCR if i have Dish Network?

Dish Network/Surround Sound and TV Hook up....Help!!?

  • We recently purchased a nice new HDTV and the Dish Network man came yesterday to hook it all up. We use a pioneer receiver, DVD player and VCR as well. The surround sound was working fine before he came but now we cannot use it to watch the TV or the VCR. We can hear a DVD in surround but neglected to check the other components be fore the installer left. I called Dish Network and they tell me it's not their problem if the HDTV is working properly. I have looked at my connections and the main thing seems to me that there is no coax connection from the VCR to the HD Sat box like before, but with the new connections there isn't a place to do so. The whole point of this was to have great sound for the ball games! It seems like with 7 available inputs we would be able to make this work!!

    You obviously want ALL audio to go through the Receiver. Here is what you do: From the Dish box, use the digital audio output to connect to dig. audio input to the Pioneer. On the Dish setup menu, specify you use digital out (DD or PCM) From the DVD, connect digital audio out to dig. audio in of the Pioneer. (Since this works, it is probably there). From the VCR, connect analog audio out (RCA) to analog audio input in the Pioneer. (NOT the Sat box) (This assumes the VCR has analog audio out, if not, connect the coax from the VCR to the TV tuner and audio out from the TV to the Pioneer). This assumes your Pioneer receiver has two digital inputs which match your sources (optical or coax). It is quite possible that the Dish fellow did not have an extra s/pdif cable to connect your set-top to the AVR; however, if it is a "coax" and not optical, feel free to use any extra RCA cable you have in the house (For example, use the Red from a red/white audio cable).

man that sucks i know that was probably a private contractor because my dad works at dish network in southern cali and he checks all components before he leaves if you live in cali pretty much anywhere i could get him to either fix it him self or get some one to fix it for you cause now hes a manager so he can get people to do it right but yeah sorry for your problem! i wish i could help

To start I would call Dish Network and threaten to cancel your service entirely if they don't their installer come back out and correct the mess he made. Be clear that everything worked before the installer came out. Then if they don't buckle and send the guy back out to fix his mess you have a decision to make. Either try and fix it yourself and keep Dish Network. Can Dish Network and call up Direct TV and see what they will offer (probably end up being the same installer). Or call someone like the Geek Squad to come out and make sense of it. Now if you choose to fix it yourself, depending on the number of inputs and outputs of each device you may have to get a little creative. To start Coax cable is just one possible connection. You also have S Video with seperate Audio and RBG Vidio with separate Audio or Component Video with Separate Audio. Now it sound like the installer got all the Video hooked up ok but there is either a loose audio cable or it's completely missing. Now Coax will carry both audio and video signals, so you need to trace where your audio out from each is going. It could be as simple as running an audio out cable (not coax) from your TV to your Surround Sound. In that case you will want to look for an option on your TV setup to turn off your TVs internal speakers. Good Luck

This is a hard one unless I know your situation. Do you know which audio cables you were using before? Just knowing the colors of the connectors will help if you can reply with that. It would be best to hook this up with digital cables but you may not have them already and they are a little pricy. If you can reply with some info I can help you out.

Should have an audio out from Dish receiver to audio in on the TV. The TV should have an audio out to audio in on the surround sound. Sounds like he didn't hook up those audio cables.

Blunt Honesty

You installation is incomplete you need additional cables to the Receiver from your components. Run all the sources to the Receiver and then out to TV.
