How do I do the 'video-in-video' effect?

How do I get the "Stage" effect with my blurays?

  • For some reason I can not get the "Stage" effect with any of my bluray movies on my TV. If you don't know what the "Stage" effect is it is when the actors flow without any kind of blur. Making them look like they are on stage. I'm using a Sony BDP-BX37 bluray player, a Phillips LED 120hz TV, and a Monster THX 500 HDMI cable. I was able to get this effect with my PS3 before I sold it on movies like True Grit, Tron Legacy and Rango. But on this blu ray player I can't get the effect. On the PS3 it had an option to set it to 24hz which gave me that effect. The only option I have on this blu ray player is to set it ti Auto or Off. There is no always On option. Is there an alternative way to get this effect with settings in my TV? Or am I just out of luck until I buy a more expensive blu ray player?

  • Answer:

The effect you are referring to is called "motion interpolation": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motion_interpolation . The PS3 does not create the effect, so your TV must be capable of doing it. Look in your TV's menus for "HD Digital Natural Motion", that is the name Philips uses for the effect. Blu-ray video is encoded at 24Hz, which matches the 24 frame per second rate of film. I would set the player to output video at 24Hz and then set the TV create the additional motion interpolation frames if you want them. If you set the player to output at 60Hz, then the player has to create intermediary frames to get 24Hz to 60Hz, which can affect image sharpness (because 60 frames can not be evenly divided by 24, 60/24=2.5). It is better to send 24Hz material on Blu-ray to the TV at 24Hz. The TV is getting the original film frames and then creating the motion interpolation frames from the sharpest source. A source that also happens to divide evenly into your TV's refresh rate of 120Hz (120/24=5). There is a more detailed explanation about interpolating differing frame rates here: http://www.missingremote.com/blog/24p-what-you-should-know .
