Home theater question?

Home theater projector cable question.?

  • I don't know a whole lot about projectors, so I'm hoping someone has a suggestion for me. I recently bought a home theater projector. I have it conntected to my satellite receiver with an s-video cable and had it connected to my dvd/home theater system with a composite (yellow) video cable. I thought I'd try to get a little better picture quality from the DVD player, so I bought a component to VGA cable. (my projecter doesnt' have component input). Now, whenever I use the DVD player, everything is mostly green. It also has a checkered line running along the top of the picture. When I turn on the cable receiver, the picture is just fine, so I know it's not the projector. Anyone have any suggestions for what the problem could be? I've checked and re-checked the connections, and everything appears to be plugged in correctly. If I can't figure it out, I guess I can go back to the composite cable, but I was told I can get a lot better quality out of component. Thanks.

  • Answer:

    1) Confirm your connections: DVD, make sure cables are inserted fully, and color-matched (green to green, etc). Projector: Make sure VGA is seated fully. IF present, tighten the 2 screws finger tight- don;t overtighten 2) Check your DVD settings: Video resolution. If the DVD has component out, then it should have either a setting to turn on Progressive Scan, or a front panel button to select Progressive scan - or both 3) Check projector settings for your VGA input. Refer to your manual for any settings on resolution or input signal type

Josh - Sorry but most VGA inputs are not set up to work with component to VGA cables. Many people buy then thinking that all they need is a cable to convert component video to VGA or visa versa and it usually does not work. See this link for details: http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10235&cs_id=1023503&p_id=2409&seq=1&format=2 You might try s-video from the DVD to the proj too. I personally would run composite from the satt box and reserve the s-vid for the DVD. There are true component to VGA converters but they are expensive: http://www.hdtvsupply.com/componenttovga.html

I have a 720p HD projector and I use a Component to VGA adapter. The only time I have seen my screen green was if the Signal Type was set to Video as opposed to RGB. Hope this helps. I have an Optoma projector and I bought their Component to VGA adapter. The projector is set-up to accept the conversion.

Daniel K is right Josh. Your Projector is classified as an office/data projector and not a Home Theater projector. The VGA input is expecting the output of a PC. Not the Y,P-r,P-b of the DVD player. You may however have a setting in the projector to accept the signal. Look into your projector manual under setup. As always, list the model numbers involved for greater detail.

Sounds like some of your color isn't getting through. First make sure your vga cable is securely plugged in. Second make sure your settings are correct on your projector and dvd player.
