Answer:
I have been in the consumer electronic business (manufacturer) for 33 years. Last year at the Consumer Electronic Show in Las Vegas, I saw such a comparison. They used identical monitors and fed each the same video, different resolutions. The results... 480i not bad, definintey not even close to hi-def 480P same as above but with less jaggy edges 720P real hi def, excellent 1080i about the same as 720P 1080P very slightly better than 720P and 1080i My advice: If you have a TV that will do 720P and/or 1080i, you will only notice a slight improvement with 1080P AND you will need a hi-def DVD player to see it. (not broadcast) If you have not bought a high def TV, go buy a 1080P because they don't cost much more.

In response to Bluray :If you are paying $100 for an HDMI cable ,next time you need one holla at me.I'll sell you one for $45. In response to the question: Any high end electronics store SHOULD be able to do that in their TV viewing room.If they can't be bothered, just tell them you have $5000 burning a hole in your pocket and that you are going to spend it somewhere else. That'll get their attention!!!

technically that would be completely impossible. lets say your monitor only supports 480i- in order to show a picture in 1080p, your monitor would have to support 1080p. therefor - it would just downscale the resolution and make it look like 480i. and if your monitor support 1080p, then your monitor will... show the picture. the only way to really tell is to buy a ps3, buy 6 high def cameras (one that supports 1080p, one that supports 1080i, one that supports 720p etc), take all the pictures, put them on the playstation 3, then buy a high def TV that supports all types of HD. You'd also need an HDMI wire for FULL 1080p. That'll be about 100 bucks for the wire. yeah. Also - Taking pictures of a television wouldnt change anything. it will all just look the same. Basically 1080p is the best, and if you can spring for the extra money to get a 1080p screen with HDMI - Go for it. You wont be disappointed.

720i does not exist. Take take a still piture and print it on Letter with 300kp, 700kp and 2mp resolutions. When you see the difference and multiply it by about 20 times - ~ difference between letter size and 50" screen.....
