No sound from my receiver?

If I hook DVD through TV then to receiver can the receiver still decode the DTS/digital sound through TV?

  • I have a DVD player, an HD TV, and a receiver with decoding for DTS and Dolby Digital sound. If I run the Picture and sound from the DVD player (no decoding) to TV (no decoding) THEN to Receiver will the receiver still be able to decode it? Or do I have to go directly from DVD player to Receiver first?

  • Answer:

The signal is Decoded and then re encoded. It will work but it is much better to run strait to receiver. If your DVD is not HD or Blueray I say use component. Depending on your receiver yours may have video up-conversion built in. Check owners manual. Then you would only need to run a HDMI to TV. It would be a much cleaner install.

DVD player to receiver is the right way to do it.

If the TV has main L/R RCA audio output the signal is encoded in the audio, so your ok. The signal at the input is passed through. You should have a menu option to turn off internal speakers. Only TV's without main L/R RCA outputs needs to be routed to the Receiver, in this case use a RCA Y cable to divide the sound inputs between the receiver and the TV.
