O.K. Ellen. I don't mean to sound rude but if you can afford a 50" plasma you can afford a decent sound system and your proposed budget won't get you one! If sound is a low priority for you, you may consider one of the Onkyo home theater in a box systems. If you want to get a really good system shop at some high-end stores for receiver brands like Denon and speaker brands such as M&K, B&W, Monitor Audio, Boston Acoustics, and Paradigm. Whatever you do, do not buy Bose. Audiophiles agree that this is not a high-end brand even though it is priced and marketed as though it were! There are many less expensive brands that sound far better than Bose. Also be sure not to buy any brands you can not listen to before buying. There are quite a few scam brands available on places like Ebay. Beware. Once you have narrowed your choices you may want to ask about them here, but the bottom line is that whatever sounds best to you within your budget is the one to get regardless of what others say.

Wait till you can you up the budget for $1k or so. Getting a $150 surround for a 50" plasma is like getting a Porsche with 1.1liter 60HP engine. But if you insist on getting one - they are all about the same in this price range...

Get the one highest on your price range. look at the Bose system

Jeez that makes me sick. A new $1,500+ TV and only 10% of that for sound? If you can spare $500, go for something like this: $160 - Onkyo 504 AV receiver http://www.accessories4less.com/cgi-bin/item/ONKTXSR504B $150 - Polk R150 5.25" speakers, 3 pairs http://shop1.outpost.com/product/4965491?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG http://www.polkaudio.com/homeaudio/specs/r150/ $125 - Dayton 10" subwoofer http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&Partnumber=300-633 $50 - 100' 12ga copper speaker wire 10 pairs of gold banana plugs 25' Subwoofer cable From www.monoprice.com TOTAL of $485. But if you insist on bottom of the barrel: http://www.accessories4less.com/cgi-bin/item/ONKHTS590S http://www.accessories4less.com/cgi-bin/item/ONKHTS680

Ellen DO NOT BUY ANYTHING FROM BOSE!!! Its a not a very good company. They sell their stuff for such a high price and its nearly worthless. They are not high quality as they say they are. So don't buy Bose. I recommend anything from Denon, Yamaha, and Sony. I like Sony the Best. They have the Best price for great quality.
