Does one HDMI cable provide both video AND sound?
-
I just bought a 24" Dynex LCD flatscreen and I'm looking to hook my PS3 up to it. In the instructions, it leads on that I only need one HDMI cable for both video and sound (you'll have to excuse my ineptness, I really don't know much about HDMI). I believe there's only one HDMI port in the back of the PS3 along with my television, so having another wouldn't be a solution. I have an optical audio cable that I attempted to connect but there's no port for that in the television whereas the PS3 has one. For some reason, the instructions also hint that I can use the AV analog cables that came with the TV to connect it but obviously there's no analog ports in the PS3! What can I do to solve the sound problem? Thanks in advance, if you need me to clarify, I certainly will.

Answer:
Connect your PS3 to the TV with a HDMI cable, then change the TV input (w/ remote) to HDMI and you should be able to get audio AND video from the PS3 to the TV. You can then play games or watch movies from the PS3. If you just want to watch TV, change the input back to TV, and this will not effect the PS3. No need for the analog cables if you are using HDMI.

Yes the HDMI cable provides sound and video. Buy the cable run it from the TV to the Ps3. I have many device that require just 1 HDMI cable. Again run it from the tv to the device and it will work just fine.

All you need is 1 HDMI from the PS3 to the TV. You don't need the optical unless you want to send the audio to something else like a surround sound system.

YES, all HDMI cable can carry the video and audio in one cable. It is also the only cable that can handle the 1080P and 7.1 audio. Hope this will help you out.

Yes. You'll notice that on the back of any given piece of equipment there may be 3 RCA jacks, but one F-plug, one S-Video, and one HDMI which all do the same thing.
The Damn Mushroom
yes, HDMI carries both audio and video. Sorry, can't help you with a PS3.

Well the question isn't completely clear, but yes hdmi carry's both digital audio and video. You will have to configure in the settings on both your TV and PS3 to allow hdmi signal. There are many settings on the PS3 you will have to set to get the best picture, so I will include a link for that. With your TV only having one hdmi input, if you ever need to add another hdmi input, you have a few options. Use a receiver with hdmi switching, use a hdmi switcher with multiple hdmi inputs, or run component audio and digital audio to the TV if no receiver is being used. Hope that helps.
