How do i get sound on my xbox/monitor?

How do I get HDMI 5.1 sound as well as a HDMI picture from my PS3?

  • I have 2 HDMI sources, the PS3 and my Sky HD+ box. I currently use the PS3 as a blue ray player and want to feed the sound and picture via the HDMI cable into an amplifier to get get true HDMI 5.1 sound (as with the Sky box). The amplifier I have in mind is the Sony STR-DG520 5.1 HDMI Amplifier. The amplifier has 3 HDMI inputs (as well 2 optical in's and a range of other inputs) and one HDMI output. If I connected the PS3 HDMI cable into this amplifier (for the sound), would the output HDMI on the amplifier then transmit the PS3 picture to the TV. The current set-up I have is a DVD upscaler/sound system (rather than a dedicated sound system/amplifier in it’s own right) and it is not possible to do the above due the fact that there is no input HDMI socket. With my current set-up, the PS3 is connected directly to the TV via a HDMI cable which transmits the video and I have an optical cable transmitting the sound to the sound system. The problem is that when I play a blue ray disk, I get no sound (all my games work fine), I presume the optical cable cannot transmit the HDMI 5.1 signal. The current alternative I have is to send the sound through the HDMI cable, but then the sound goes through my TV speakers which is as good useless! Finally, if I purchased the amplier, would it be possible to use my exisitng speakers with the system. Many thanks for your help. Danny

Alex is wrong by a mile. You are right that you need a new receiver/amplifier for true HD sound formats from the PS3. The receiver you listed however is not able to do this. You need at the least a receiver that can take multichannel pcm from HDMI. The onkyo 576 can do this and is one of the cheapest options. I suggest the onkyo 606 for future proofing but it doesn't matter with the PS3. If you get one of these what you would do is connect the PS3 Via hdmi to the receiver then connect the receiver via hdmi to the TV. The receiver would play the true 5.1 sound and would pass the video to the TV. Remember to set the PS3 audio to linear pcm before doing this however. If the speakers you use right now use standard speaker cables and are 8 ohm speakers you can use it with practically any new amp.

I assume you want to get HD sounds like DTS-HD MA or Dolby True HD from Blu-ray movies via HDMI connection between PS3 and receiver. Your receiver doesn't support audio via HDMI so you have to use optical cable from PS3 to receiver to get surround sound. You can't get HD sounds with optical cable, just 5.1 Dolby Digital or DTS. You can connect all HDMI devices to receiver and you need only one HDMI output to TV for video. You should check BD/DVD audio settings on PS3 menu.

First, unless you have a 7.1 system or really good speakers you probably won't be able to tell the difference between core Dolby/DTS and HD Dolby/DTS. If your current system has an optical input available you can send your audio from the PS3 to it directly. (You'll have to adjust the PS3 audio output to bitstream.) TVs don't pass surround sound, so you need to send the audio direct. If you want true lossless audio you will have to get a new receiver that has HDMI switching capability, and NOT "pass through". The Onkyo TX-SR606 is a good, relatively inexpensive solution. So are the older 605 and the newer 607. With these receivers you connect the PS3 and Sky box with HDMI cables. The receiver will then process the audio and send the video out to the TV via another HDMI cable. The Onkyo receivers I mentioned, as well as most other good receivers, have standard 5-way binding posts, so if your current speakers have normal +/- wires then you'll be able to attach them.

Q: If I connected the PS3 HDMI cable into this amplifier (for the sound), would the output HDMI on the amplifier then transmit the PS3 picture to the TV. A, YES. Your amp can decode HDMI audio and also pass the video to the TV. This is the BEST setup. Q: With my current set-up, the PS3 is connected directly to the TV via a HDMI cable which transmits the video and I have an optical cable transmitting the sound to the sound system. The problem is that when I play a blue ray disk, I get no sound (all my games work fine), I presume the optical cable cannot transmit the HDMI 5.1 signal. A. Optical can pass Dolby Digital (5.1) or DTS (5.1) but can't pass Dolby HD or DTS-HD, for that you need to use the HDMI cable.
