Whats a good home theater speaker?

  • Ok so I was searching online at best buy for a home theater speaker and saw a couple of name brand wireless home theater speakers they offer only the wireless subwoofer and a sound bar! Is that all you need to purchase for a home theater to get movie theater quality sound? Or do I still have to purchase all 5 speakers? Or is the subwoofer and soundbar good enough?

  • Answer:

In truth - you need a full 5.1 set of speakers to try to mimic a movie theater experience. SPEAKERS You need more than speakers. You cannot usually hook up speakers straight to the TV - you need an amplifier and some electronics. This is taken care of by a AV Receiver. RECOMMENDED SYSTEM With a inexpensive Onkyo system for $380 from Amazon (search for "Onkyo Home Theater") this is a great starting system that has a LOT of advantages over the crap systems priced at $199-$299 with a built in disk drive and skinny receivers. SOUND-BARS These actually work halfway decently but don't give you real surround sound. The electronics and amplifier in a sound-bar is built into the speaker so this is good for your technology-challenged grandparents or rooms with heavy space constraints (a dorm room, RV, etc.) They also depend on the room like have side-walls to bounce sound off of. The better sound-bars accept optical from your TV (check for this) and have a external sub-woofer. Sadly the decent sound-bars like this seem to run $500-$900. WIRELESS Give this up. I'm serious. They tend to not sound so good, the speakers are not really 'wireless' because you have to plug in an AC power cord and frankly - you are spending $$$ for the wireless and built-in amp instead of decent speakers. A spool of good 12 ga speaker wire and an AV Receiver is actually a very cost-effective way to run speakers. Check out the Onkyo systems. They do a LOT for the price and will prevent you from being one of the 20+ whiny posters that come here every week asking how they hook up their game/BluRay/TV/MediaPlayer to their crap systems - only to discover they cannot. Hope this helps.

Samsung Electronics HT-D550 Home Theater System is player works great. Plays DVDs, divx, mp3, etc... The Amazon description says it's wifi enabled but IT IS NOT. I was hoping to get a player that would play media off of my network, but I researched before I bought it and no other site said it had wi-fi, so I was mostly just hoping. Mysteriously, Samsung has no mention of this product on their website. Using the HDMI connection, if you turn this player on and put a disk in, my TV turns on and changes itself to the correct input. It's so easy that my 18 month old has learned how to get a movie going. The sound is great too. I had a philips home theater system before and the center channel was always too low. It was booming bass out of the subwoofer before the center channel was loud enough to hear voices. With this Samsung, the voices are clear and crisp. And the bass is great when you want it too. I really like the "touch sensitive" buttons. It's so easy to clean sticky kids fingerprints off the face.

Picked Yamaha NS-SP1800BL speakers up to go with my recently purchased yamaha 463 home theater receiver. These speakers were really the only ones in their price range, so I wondered if they sounded inferior. In short they sound incredible. Comparatively speaking, they are a great bargain. They look and feel well constructed and I cannot believe the sound coming from them, it is fantastic. Well worth the price and highly recommended.

I just went through the Home Theater shopping experience. I looked at Sound Bars, the Bose Cinemate, Sony, yamaha and onkyo. I setteld on an Onkyo system that I got for under $300 at accessories4less.com
