How do I connect my old subwoofer to my new speakers?

How do i connect my subwoofer and 5.1 surround speakers to my tv?

  • i have just bought a wharfdale 37inch tv model no ltf37klcb, i am having problems connecting my technika 5.1 surround sound system. i can get no sound out of any of the speakers no matter what configuration i try. the sound system has 6 connections the tv has 12. including ypbpr?. i have connected the sub and central speaker to my dvd hard drive as that is all the connections that will fit in that, and they work fine, thus eliminating the fact it may be a defective sub or cables. to be precise connections on the tv are 6 ypbpr connections 4 ypbpr audio input connections 2 dvi audio input connections 1 vga audio input any help willl be greatly appreciated. any further info required please ask.

  • Answer:

You are missing one vital component - an amplifier. The speakers you have need separate amplification in order to work. An audio visual (a/v) or 'surround sound' amplifier is the only way to get the speakers to make any sound.

buy and amp and then connect with a TOSHlink or digital coaxial cable. then wire your speakers (and plug your sub) into the amp.

First of all "Y Pb Pr" is color space encoding scheme so these 3 pin slots make a color picture. Next to "Y Pb Pr" there must be 2 pin slots which must say audio "L" and "R." Getting this clear, to watch movies on your DVD player you have to connect it with an Audio Video cable which is 5 pin cable with 5 different color on each side of pin. on the DVD player there is a slot which must say "output" an that you have to connect 5 of the pin on "Y" "Pb" "Pr" "L" "R" and remember which color of pin you have used on each slot, and connect the rest of the 5 pins according to there color used on the DVD to the TV "Input" where "Pb" with Pb", "Y" with "Y" and so on. As i can see that you have 2 video input on your TV, the 6 Y Pb Pr connections are just 2 video input which must have 2 audio connection on each. You also have 2 computer inputs on your TV which are DVI "digital visual interface." plus VGA is also old type of computer input. I hope this will help. Moreover, if you don't want sound to come out of your TV while watching movie on DVD you could remove the L and R cable on both the TV and DVD or buy the 3 pin cable rather than the 5 pin cable that is your choice.

What you are referring to is Component audio/video connections, (ypbpr). these take a special plug in cord but are worth thje extra effort in qu0ality sound and picture. You have not listed any specs on the Technica surround system to be able to help you figure (or configure), it out! It will depend upon how old the connections are, (are they component video? Or are they HDMI? in the series of 5.1 surround that you have. It will depend upon the era of equipment & if it is compatible. Hope this helps!!
