Is there quality loss playing a dvd on a blu-ray player?

  • We are going to buy an HDTV this weekend and are considering buying a blu-ray player as well. We do not want to replace our entire collection of DVDs. We've heard that blu-ray makes standard DVDs look better, but we've also heard they make them look horrible. Which is it? Suggestions on brand would be helpful as well.

    You do not loss video quality by moving up on your disc player to a blu ray. It wil be up converted to a higher resolution. Keep in mind that if the quality of the video is bad to start with it will look even worst when it is up converted. Go online to Home Theater Magazine and read the reviews on tvs along with the pro and con of each technology. You will find blu ray disc players also. Panasonic is the most reliable brand for tv and blu ray disc players. Hope this will help you out.

if anything they will look the same as a regular DVD player. it will not make it look worse that's for sure. as far as brand: Vizio, Sony are good ones

First off, there definitely won't be any quality lost. In any home entertainment setup, the quality will always be as good as the lowest-quality component. You'd get essentially the same quality as watching a Bluray disc with your player connected via red-white-yellow cables. I think some Bluray players can "upconvert" DVD playback so that it's between DVD and BD quality. Not sure though.

The Blu-ray players make DVDs look near Blu-ray quality. Mine upconverts to 1080p at 120hz.

i am quite sure that blu ray would make the dvd 'better' it defiantly wouldn't decrease graphics
