Why don't my surround sound speakers work?

3 speakers not working on 5.1 surround sound?

  • I have a Phillips 5.1 surround sound system (HTS3510) and ive had it for a few months now. Recently i noticed that the rear 2 speakers and the centre speaker weren't working when i plugged it into my laptop to use as speakers. i thought this was because my laptop was not functional with 5.1, but i know better now. i tested the speakers with a DVD film i knew worked with 5.1 and the problem remained. i tried re-adjusting the leads and nothing changed. It used to work all the time, but i just dont know whats changed! any help would be appreciated

    Most of them home theater in a box are not flexible for adding anything to them. Most of them does not offer an optical audio input for you to receiver a digital signal from the tv or other device. Keep in mind that they are designed for you to watch a movie with surround sound only. In your case it is in stereo only (Red and White rca jacks) input on your home theater in a box. Hope this will help you out.

Check the settings on the Phillips system. It sounds like you have set stereo mode so only the front 2 speakers work. Are you hearing dialog from them? If you hear dialog - then the system is down-mixing the 5 channels to 2. If dialog is missing - then something is wrong. Try plugging the left speaker into the center output and play something. Do you hear dialog from the left speaker? If so - the wiring or center speaker is bad. If you get nothing from the left speaker - then the Philips unit is broken. STRONG SUGGESTION: Go to Amazon and search for "Onkyo Home Theater". They have much better systems than the Philips system. Hope this helps.
