What's a good HD reciever?

Question regarding AV Reciever & HD DVD Player Connection?

  • Just recently bought an HD DVD player, still new to HD so still a little confused on all it has to offer. Currenty my reciever doesnt have any HDMI inputs, so I am simply running the HDMI Video output straight to the TV, and still using Optical audio output into my reciever. I am considering purchasing a new reciever with HDMI inputs. My question is, to fully get the best sound from Dolby Digital +, and Dolby Tru, does the reciever need to be certified for this? Or is that not even availible? Basically if I just run an HDMI from the dvd player to the reciever to the will I get all the HD sound benefits, or does the reciever need to be certified for DD+, and Dolby tru? Thank you!

  • Answer:

Your only option today - if your player can decode the new formats! - is to use 5.1 (or 7.1) analog connection from your player to the reciever. In order to decode new uncompressed DOLB Y and DTS formats, you need to connect you player to a reciever using HDMI 1.3, and your reciever need to have the appropriate decoder. While some players are HDMI 1.3 equipped (PS3 and newer Toshibas), I don;t know - and I AM LOOKING MYSELF - any reciever with HDMI 1.3 and new format decoders. They should be coming out soon -but not yet. THANX TO THE PEOPLE WHO CAME UP WITH ANOTHER FORMAT WAQ - HD-DVD VS BLU-RAY - NOBODY WANTS TO INVEST IN NEW TECHNOLOGIES! People don't want to buy products, manufacturers don't want to manufacture/improve products, studios don't want to invest in the quality of picture and sound. WHEN WILL THEY LEARN! Why not learn from CD and DVD - the most successfull formats, which did not have a format war! Why not learn form VHS/BETA and especially SACD/DVD-AUDIO wars, where EVERYONE lost out! Consumers, Manufactires, Music Labels and Musicians, Movie Studios - EVERYONE LOST OUT!

Onkyo has several new A/V receivers with Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus, and DTS-HD Master Audio decoding, a few are currently available. As far as I know there is no certification specifically for the new high-def surround sound audio formats. The easiest way to get the most bang for your buck is to buy Category 2 (HDMI 1.3a) rated HDMI cables that are certified by Simplay Labs (or an HDMI approved third party lab) and connect your HD DVD player to a receiver such as the new Onkyos. Not only should the cable be certified but the high-def DVD player and receiver must fully support HDMI 1.3a. (Hopefully the new Onkyos will be certified by Simplay Labs.) There are other, less desirable alternatives to connect your HD DVD player to an A/V receiver but HDMI should offer the greatest benefit while greatly simplifying the task of connecting your equipment - provided everything works as intended. While there are no guarantees with new technologies such as HDTV, HDMI, Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus, and DTS-HD Master Audio surround sound, certified HDMI products should offer you the best opportunity to assemble a successful high-def video system.

HD is a video technology and is independent of the audio signal. Running the HDMI from your HD player directly to your TV will give you the same picture as running it through an AV receiver with HDMI inputs. The advantage of running thru the receiver is that it will support more than one HDMI device at a time, whereas you may only have on eHDMI port on your TV. The audio quality you will get is only as good as what was recorded onto the DVD. If the DVD was recorded using a newer Dolby encoding, then your receiver will need to have a decoding capability for that signal type to take process it correctly. Otherwise it will defaut to a vanilla version of Dolby sound that is supported by the AV receiver. So yes, you'll need to look for certification that the receiver can handle the encoding types you're interested in.
