What is the best material for a projector screen?

Best projector screen material?

  • When making homemade projector screen, what is the best material to use? I would like to build a frame to hang on the wall, but I'm not sure what material will give me the best picture.

  • Answer:

I'm about to unleash the knowledge-demon upon you. Here it is... http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/forumdisplay.php?f=110 That is the DIY Screen forum. In that forum, will will find hundreds of DIY screen enthusiasts who have tested many different paint mixtures and surfaces and combinations of both, with photos for accuracy. They are VERY detailed and are willing to give way more advice than you actually need. If you can't find an answer there, it doesn't exist. I made a 4' x 8' frame and used this stuff called Blackout cloth....it's white and it blocks all light, as the name suggest. Do a search on that sight and you'll find something close. Also, to a search for frame building to get an idea for a frame. I went super-simple and bought four 1" x 1" x 8', cut two of them in half, connected them via L and T brackets, and stretched the blackout cloth on there and stapled it to the frame. It took a few hours, but my screen is comparable to some that cost 300 to 500 bucks. Here are details on how to strech a canvas. http://www.rexart.com/stretching.html Even if you just browse that sight, you'll know what you're dealing with. Start off with Beginner's Guild to DIY screens and move on form there. You won't be disappointed.

They make projector screen paint. Build your screen out of plywood or thin MDF and use this stuff to make it reflective. It'll save you a little money vs. a roll up screen.

Blackout material is the best way to go. Just go to any fabric store and buy it by the yard. You don't need to treat it or paint it, it has perfect gain 1.1 for projection. It is very easy then to stretch on your own built to size framing.
