Any suggestions for a decent surround sound system?
-
I have a 46" LED 3D television (actually this is my 2nd one, the 1st one died after 2-1/2 months but don't get me started on the customer service from Toshiba (SUCKS!), however I do want to say that even though it it wasn't their fault & past the point of no return with problems, etc. Amazon came through and picked up the ball where Toshiba dropped it!! Amazon is AWESOME!) that I'm thinking of getting surround sound for just to enhance the viewing experience. Any recommendations, suggestions, advise, personal experience, brands, etc? Thanks!

What I would recommend is looking at an Onkyo HT-S3400, it is a 5.1 receiver and a set of speakers. Demo the system at a Fry's Electronic store, it cost just under $400. This is better than any of those home theater in a box, which are not flexible for adding or upgrading. If one item fail the whole system need to be replaced. Beside that you have a blu ray disc player already which you can connect to the receiver. You will also need an optical audio cable to connect the tv to the receiver so that you can hear the tv program through the system. You will also need one more HDMI cable to connect the receiver to the tv, while your present HDMI cable from the blu ray disc player will connect to the receiver. Hope this will help you out.

Try and get an AVR, that is an Audio Video Receiver, to which you can connect your DVD player, your CD player, your tv and what not. It's a better experience than the one today's "Home Theatres" with DVD included, offer. Be sure it has Dolby Pro-Logic, so you can enjoy 5.1 surround sound, that is two satellite speakes in the front, one in the middle, two in the back and a sub-woffer. I had a Teac AVR for years, and How I miss its wonderful sound, even though it is a modest brand. The Sony Home Theatre I have now doesn't even come close.

Go down to Best Buy or HH Gregg. Tell em you want an entry-mid level ONKYO Surround Sound Receiver and a 5.1 Kilpsch Speaker package (dont forget some "basic") speaker wire/sub woofer wire. If you need an extra HDMI cable......WALMART has great prices You'll like it. If not, take it back. You won't need to take it back. http://www.AllAboutHomeElectronics.com

You have 3 main options: a) A sound Bar, which is a long speaker that mounts near the TV and mimics surround sound. It's the cleanest setup, has an ok effect and doesn't require running wires to rear channels b) a HTIB (home-theater in a box)- a combination of a receiver/player, usually 5 speakers and normally a subwoofer. Most sound decent, they offer true surround, usually have a DVD or BluRay player built in and will please most people. You can find these at most electronics stores, most department stores, Costco/BJs/Sams Club, and online (Amazon, etc.). The downside is the speakers are usually pretty small and don't sound great with very loud volumes. As example, you can see a list of Soundbars and HTIBs at Newegg here: http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCategory=501&name=Home-Theater-in-a-Box&Order=PRICE The products should be similar in other electronics retailers. Expect to spend $300+ for a decent quality system. c) Separates - Here you get a Surround receiver and speakers of your choice. Best possible sound, most flexibility, but most cost. Expect to spend $600+ If you give more info on room size and such, we may be able to offer specific suggestions
