Can HD-DVDs be played in standard DVD players. And what's the difference between HD and Blu-Ray?

Answer:
No. HD-DVDs can not be played by standard DVD players because they require a different color laser. The main difference between HD-DVDs and Blu-Ray Discs is the quality (HD-DVDs play in 720p and Blu-Ray play in 1080p). The technical difference is the thickness of the discs. Blu-Ray discs are much thinner(Which is why they cost so much more to produce) and they use a blue colored laser which is their name sake. yes a high def DVD will play in a standard DVD player just at a 480 resolution. the only real difference between the 2 formats is green and blue laser diodes. there both the same quality of picture they both hold the same amount of data potential. to see a real difference a movie has to be filmed with high def. camera's. up scaling a standard movie won't make it any better it only takes more space on a disk. if the data was never there in the first place up scaling won't make it magically appear. blu ray has more movies right now. but Toshiba is working on that. if your looking to buy a player go with an LG they're $1199 plays both formats or PS3 is a blu ray and xbox has an hd add on. I make High end home theater systems and to settle an argument measured identical scene's and they gave identical results.

NO! NO! NO! HD-DVDs and Blu-ray Discs CANNOT be played in a Standard DVD player. An HD disc has potential to hold up to 25 GB of information. A BD can hold up to 50 GB of info. (Both are for a dual layer disc). The discs are the same thickness as a DVD. Each High Def format has there respective studios. HD: Paramount and Universal. BD: Disney (Buena Vista) and Sony. Each format has its perks. Some say that the Video quality is better on HD. From personal experience the quality on both is superb. BD is a bit more expensive but it will probably drop in price soon. The demos at BB and CC really don't show the quality of picture. Check out Blu-raydisc.com for more info on Blu-ray.

Two different formats, the same hi def output, the same problem as back in the 80's when the VHS and Beta formats were out there. You can play Hd in reguklar dvd players but of course you will not get the resolution. You could play the regular dvds in hi def and make them better.
Well if they could, then why would companies be selling extremely expensive HD-dvd players? Blu-rays are 'more interactive,' or so I'm told...
