I would very much appreciate if you could please explain in simple layman's terms, best way of connecting the system so the ordinary tv channel and the dvd/cd playback sounds are heard through the 5.1 surround system. NB: specs for the tv, dvd and surround could be found by googling. Please help a desperate soul.

hey there, you may or may not have gone to the sites mentioned before. might be a good source but i would like to say that there is a good rule of thumb for hookups: always go from output on your component (dvd, vcr, cable, etc.) to input on your home theatre reciever. choose the input on your reciever that makes the most sense to you. remember that when you plug your dvd into the reciever, you will need to switch your reciever over to that same mode. although this varies, most home theatre recievers will have a dvd mode or it may say digital in. it also allows you to use both s-video for your picture and a digital connection which will either be a tos-link (optic cable) connection or digital coaxial connection for your audio. these connections make a big difference in your sound quality and can determine whether you even get a good 5.1 surround or not (most likely not if you dont use them). most home theatre recievers will accept these connections. here's what i usually do: use the coax antenna type connector direct to the tv for when you want to just to quietly watch a show without the home theatre system going. then do the full connections for your home theatre for when you want to crank up the volume. your home theatre will have an output to your television (if its new enough and big enough) with both s-video and rca type jacks. you may choose to use the rca jacks (i have and thus get a little better sound to the tv) but to decrease the complexity of the setup you may just want to use the coax connection that carries both audio and video. this requires that you change the input selection back and forth on your tv when you want to switch from regular viewing without the home theatre to surround sound with the home theatre. on my tv it is the difference between s-video in and the un-named line in. use the input button on your tv remote or on your tv to select the different input modes for your tv. hope this doesnt sound too confusing because it is fairly simple to figure out once you get it set up ok. have fun!
