How do i get surround sound or hd sound from ps3?
-
Hi i have a ps3 and a hd tv as most people do now, i have an all in 1 dvd/amp which i want to ditch but not sure which amps or how you get sound or the surrounds sound from blu rays say, i thought that ps3 would go to tv via hdmi then also to amp via hdmi but ps3 only have 1 hdmi slot so im guessing its some sort of optical, or does the ps3 go straight to amp via hdmi and then from amp via hdmi to tv, as you see im lost.!!!

Eureka!!! the only person close to reality was Peter D, go straight HDMI from PS3 to TV for video only, and Optical cable from PS3 to receiver, both connection must be assigned in PS3 menu and maybe in receiver too, PS3 Menu select HDMI video only and Optical, check mark all types of audio and system will detect and use the proper one automatically.

If you have a receiver that supports audio via HDMI connection then you just need an HDMI from PS3 to receiver and another from receiver to TV, with this receiver you will get HD sound such as DTS-HD MA, Dolby True HD or PCM uncompressed from Blu-ray movies. Otherwise, you have to connect optical cable from PS3 to receiver for surround sound and HDMI from PS3 to TV for video.

without getting too technical... I would suggest spinning around really fast... this will simulate "surround" sound. or have a friend spin the speaker around your head... this way is easier to play games. Good luck

You have a home theater in a box (HTIB) that plays DVDs and a PS3. Most all HTIBs are HDMI pass through, so they do not process audio signals via HDMI. So you would send the PS3 video to the TV via HDMI and the PS3 audio to the HTIB via optical cable. Adjust the PS3 video and audio output settings appropriately (hint: bitstream, not PCM) and you will hear the core "lossy" Dolby or DTS 5.1 surround soundtracks on your HTIB. If you want to play "HD audio" and PCM (uncompressed multi-channel) movie soundtracks you will need to purchase a receiver that can accept audio via HDMI. These are often called "HDMI switching" or "HDMI repeating" features.
