Why do I get no sound on hd channels on home theater?

Inputs and Outputs-Home Theater Needs?

  • We have a relatively new HP Plasma HD? television. We also are currently using a DirectTV HD receiver for cable. The television has 3 HDMI? slots. Now we would like to get a HomeTheater System with the 5.1 channels surround sound capabilities. Which system would we need if we are looking at getting a Blue Ray DVD player? How many and which kind of inputs and outputs of HDMI or other types of connections do I need to make sure the Home Theater System has everything I need to maximize the video/audio quality (assuming I want to hook up the TV, DirectTV, and a Blue Ray player)?

  • Answer:

Get a home theater reciever (AVR) with 2 hdmi inputs (or more) then hook the sat box to one input on the AVR, the bluray to another. One output (hdmi) from the AVR to the TV. This will allow you to use the avr as a switch. You would turn it on, change the input to either the sat box or bluray and it will output the signal to the tv. You can get an hdmi splitter (called an hdmi distribution amplifier) and hook that into the sat box. One side would go to the avr and the other to the tvs 2nd hdmi input. This would allow you to change the input on the tv so you wouldn't have to turn surround sound on everytime (watching the news, for example, you probably don't care to have surround). The better names in AVRs are Yamaha, Denon, and Onkyo. I prefer Denon but the Onkyo will give you more bang for the buck and has a nice sound. Almost forgot about speakers. You really need to spend time listening to a lot of different makes. They have diferent sound qualities and only you can decide what you like. I would suggest trying out the following names Klipsch Boston Acoustics Energy Take 5 classics Definitive technology Cambridge Soundworks (bang for the buck company along with Energy) Please do NOT buy a home theater in a box! They simply aren't worth the $ in the long run.

You only have 2 inputs to the TV: the DirectTV box and the BluRay player so you already have enough inputs. There are 2 ways to hook things up. You need to decide which one to use: A: Feed BluRay & DirectTV to a Receiver with HDMI, 1 HDMI cable feeds the TV. B: Feed BluRay & DirectTV to the TV. Run Audio (optical or coaxial-digital) to a Receiver. Option A: is slicker, and sexier, but requires a newer receiver and you have to leave the receiver on all the time and always use the receiver and the 5.1 speakers even for casual TV watching. Option B: is easier to use because the TV remote and TV speakers are used for casual watching, but you turn down the volume and fire up the AV Receiver for serious movie watching. It also works with older equipment so you dont need the newest AV Receiver. Depending on the way you plan to hookup will tell you if you need inputs on the receiver or the TV.
