How do I hook up my computer to my 5.1 receivers?

Need help connecting speakers to TV??!?!?

  • I want to connect speakers to my television. I have a Vizio 32" M320VT and I want a very basic sound system to hook up (I.E just left and right audio). My tv has analog inputs for these types of speakers but I can't find any speakers that are equiped with analog connectors (the red and black ones). I don't know what to do and I definetly don't want to invest in a receiver at this point in time. Questions: Does anyone have any ideas what type of speakers would be compatible? Are there any other ways (excluding receivers) to hooking up external speakers to my tv? Can I use my computer as a receiver? (if its possible) I have very little knowledge of home audio and related topics so forums and sources would be much appreciated. Thanks

George, although the first answer is correct, since you profess to be a novice at home audio I wanted to give you a little more information. I looked up your Vizio M320VT on Vizio's web site to verify what types of audio connections you have. According to Vizio, the only audio output available is SPDIF Digital Optical. There are no analog red and white audio outputs. The only red and white audio connections are inputs that are shared with the component/composite video inputs. Vizio web site info: http://www.vizio.com/led-lcd-hdtvs/m320vt.html So what does that mean for you? In order to hook up speakers you need several things to happen. First you need to decode the digital audio into an analog signal. Next you need to amplify the signal to be able to drive the speakers and lastly you need speakers. A simple solution is a sound bar that has the digital audio connection. This is an example of a sound bar that would work for you. http://www.amazon.com/VIZIO-VSB200-Universal-Sound-Bar/dp/B002EPF6YO/ref=pd_sim_sbs_e_1 Another way to do this is to buy a digital audio to analog audio converter. This will give you the analog red and white connections. Here is an example of one. http://www.amazon.com/FiiO-Digital-Analog-Audio-Converter/dp/B0053VKP8S/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1328293402&sr=1-3 You can buy an adapter that goes from RCA to 3.5mm audio and plug in some powered computer speakers. http://www.amazon.com/RiteAV-3-5mm-Stereo-Male-Cable/dp/B001S0LUCI

There is no speaker terminals for you tv. The only audio output tv today have are through an optical audio port. This is a digital signal that has to be decoded by a receiver, home theater in a box with an optical audio input or a sound bar. Beside that tv do not have the power to drive any external speakers. Hope this will help you out.
