Are there any DVD players that can play data discs?

Will HD-DVD and Blu-Ray players only play their own discs or will players play both formats?

  • Will one DVD player play all my DVD's when HD kicks in, both formats have been picked up by different film studios, I basically want to know I'll need two players to play the different formats?

    There are 2 company's planing on a "hybrid player" samsung and LG. supporting Blue-Ray and HD-DVD in the same player. and like the new toys from Toshiba's HD-DVD and samsung's BD-player they're likely to offer DVD playback and up converting them to 1080p.

I know the Blu-Ray players will upconvert regular DVDs to 720p resolution., But won't play any other such as VCDs or CDs much less HD-DVDs.

the two foramts are totally different from each other and cant play one or the other. eash is trying to be the industry standard similar to the betamax and VHS fight before. the betamax lost here in the US and in most countries, well except japan. toshiba is pushing for the HD-DVD, while the rest of the companies liek JVC, Pioneer, Panasonic, Samsung are all for Blu-Ray. they say blu-ray is backwards compatible for DVDs only.

I don't think there is any question that future players will play both types, just as you can now buy CD players that will play both DVD-Audio and SACD discs. Right now the players being offered are restricted to playing back one or the other. All will play the current format DVDs
