Can I connect my integrated amplifier to a power amplifier and still use my integrated amplifier?
-
This is a very confusing integrated amplifier question but let me try and explain my situation. I have an integrated amp with two speakers connected to them, I want to add two more speakers by connecting a power amp to my existing integrated amp. I know I can connect my integrated amp to the power amp by using the "Pre-Outs" on my integrated amp. However, when you use the "pre-out" it completely by-passes the power amp located inside my integrated amp. So here is my question, I bought a audio Y-cable rca cable ( 1 male end, 2 female ends ). What if i were to plug the male end into the "pre-out" of my integrated amp and run 1 female end into the power amp and run the 2nd female end back into my integrated amp. By running the 2nd female rca cord back into my integrated amp, will it still be able to power the 2 speakers that I currently have hooked up to it??? To conclude, I want 2 speakers running on the power amp and 2 speakers running on my current integrated at the same time. If you are able to answer this question I will be so happy. Once again, I'm so sorry because I know this is such a confusing question!!!!!!

Answer:
No, this will not work. Your integrated amp can only play 1 source. This means that in order for it to accept the "output" from the split cable back into the integrated amp it would have to be on another source, not the one you intended to play. The problem isn't that the integrated amp isn't getting the signal. It is that use of the Pre-amp output on the integrated amp is still disabling its own internal amplifier. You could instead, buy yourself another Y connector (1M, 2F) and connect them to your source audio connections and run separate cables to each amp but you wouldn't have volume control for the power amp so there is no great way to do this. If you are desperate to make this work then you could use this http://www.amazon.com/Brand-Universal-Remote-Control-Output/dp/B0036VVKEU/ref=sr_1_18?ie=UTF8&qid=1328916278&sr=8-18 and the 2 Y connectors and use them both as power amplifiers running off of the same volume control. If you have more than 1 source then you could use this http://www.amazon.com/TC-716-Stereo-Selector-BLACK-VERSION/dp/B0001F347K/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1328916416&sr=1-1 to connect all of the sources to one selector. So it would be audio cables from your sources to the selector box, an audio cable from there to the external volume control, the 2 Y connector 1 Male to 2 female then 2 sets of audio cable running from the splitters to each of the amps. Good luck.

It sounds like you are over thinking this. If you are using your integrated's pre-out, the signal is already in the integrated and it should already be able to play it's too speakers. All you need is the pre-out to the external amplifier. You don't need to loop it back into the integrated. mk

Yes, that would work. I fully understand what you are trying to do. Hope this will help.
