What Speaker Should I get?

What brand and size is the best most effective speaker wire and where can i get it?

  • i am looking for a 12 guage speaker wire, but i dont know what brand would be best. if you purchased some speaker cable and are impressed wih it. let me know where you got it.

  • Answer:

More important that the gauge of the wire (unless you need a very long run), is the quality of the conductor and the techniques used to transport the signal. What does your system consist of? What is your budget? I will provide you with three brands for you to consider that I have found through my 20+ years of experimenting with different cables to be the best that I have heard at their specific price points in overall performance and musicality... Using an 8' pair as a reference: $100-$400 = DH Labs Silver Sonic $400-$1,200 = Audience $1,200+ = MUSIC Timbre

I got some 12 gauge at Home Depot but if you want the best you need to go to a music store and get some monster or mogami. Youll pay big though. I cant tell a difference and I have both. I use the Home Depot stuff in my music room for my p.a. but when i play out I use monster. Cant tell between the two. Its just good to know you have the best when your playing in front of alot of people and pushing about 1000 watts per channel through your mains and the same through your subs. But always go with 12 gauge over long runs or if your just pushing alot of power. Good luck.

Don't go for the high end stuff. Monster makes good speaker wire that is not overpriced. You can use any heavy wire (12 guage), but zip cord is not marked, so you have to be careful how you hook it up. Speaker cord has marks to distinguish the two leads. Be sure to connect the marked lead to the + terminal of your speakers.

Monster Cable speaker wire all the way. And no, it's not that expensive, it just depends on how many feet, if your going to run it in wall or in your attic, or just on the floor. It's by far the best quality for the money. 12 gauge is a bit excessive, anything 18 and under is suitable.

In the US, I've been happy with high purity copper I bought from Radio Shack (the sales guy pulled it from the store room). It really is silly to spend $500-1000 for wire to put on a $2000 system. Chances are, the really high end stuff won't sound any different than mid grade material. Just don't buy the real cheap stuff and you'll be ok.

12 gauge to me is overkill, 16 gauge will work just fine. Monster cable is a fine speaker wire manufacturer but is expensive. Try buying your wire at a hardware or home improvement store, it will work as good as anybody's.

Go to Audioholics website and read about it. I think you'll find that plain ole zip cord will do you just fine and is recommended by many as the choice wire to use. Go to your local hardware store and save yourself a ton of money. Below is a link directly to an article on speaker wire.
