How do i get my speakers to put out more sound?

How do I get my Bose speakers to sound their best?

  • So, I have two Bose 201 Series IV bookshelf speakers hooked up to an Onkyo receiver and then to a Stanton T80 turntable. It's been working well except for one thing: I've been playing some more bass heavy records (Kanye West, Nas, etc.) and it just doesn't get the "bumping" sound I'm going for. I played around with the knobs on the receiver for a while. What I found was that I only got a good sound when I changed the balance so that all the sound was only coming out of one speaker. When I put teh balance in the middle, it seems as though the sound is split and the overall quality is very hollow. I don't know a whole lot about how these things work so I was wondering if anyone had a solution! Thanks.

    Sounds like you have them wired out of phase. Try reversing the +/- wires on just one of the speakers. mk

Well the best thing I could tell you is sell the BOSE and buy a set of anything else. Anyone that knows anything about audio will tell you the same thing. 1 Bose are over-priced and 2 anything else sounds better.

Maniacs answer is spot on. The only thing I will add is after you get the speakers sounding right go out and buy a nice sub woofer for that " bumping " bass you're looking for.

There is nothing you can do to get small speakers to produce a lot of bass. You need a large speaker and a big amp to get big bass. There is no way around that.

get rid of your Bose speakers. get a jbl instead. when it comes to loud speakers, don't count on Bose, they suck. i don't see your whole set up, but i think you need an amp, and some JBL speakers.

Maniac is correct. Just figured I'd add that the phase problem could be anywhere. You could have wires swapped at the turntable cartridge...
