How do I turn my movie into Blu-Ray?

Why does my Onkyo TX-SR806 keeps turning off when I watch cetain Bluray movies?

  • I use the PS3 mated with my onkyo tx-sr806 for watching bluray and netflix, and playing games. My receiver would shut off right before the movie starts after a loud zap, which can be heard on the speakers. It startled me the first time this happened. This only happens on certain Bluray movies, not all of them. My kids play Call of Duty and many other games all the times and it's never shut off on them. If I put in on mute until the movie starts then it's fine. No zap. Once the movie is started, I can turn up the volume loud and it would not shut off. I've checked all the speaker wires. I even replaced the hdmi cable. It's a pain because every time it shuts off, I have to pull the plug and wait about 5min or else the receiver will not detect the signal coming from the PS3. Plese help.

  • Answer:

I have no idea why, but I have had something similar happen with Blu-ray disks shutting off my Pioneer Blu-ray player (vs the receiver in your case). It only happened a few times and only when I was using both HDMI outputs on my Pioneer receiver, but it was most annoying to have to restart the disk every 10-20 minutes! I can only assume my problem had something to do with the active nature of the HDMI interface and that somehow a signal is sent at some point that causes a shutdown. I talked to a number of "experts" when it first happened and none had any good explanation. Since a firmware update "appeared" to solve the problem I didn't pursue further. So, while there is no "logical" reason to assume it would help as a first step make sure you have the latest firmware for the PS3. A quick search found reports of similar problems to yours (See link for one example involving a PS3 and Denon receiver), that MAY have been due to the receiver's protection circuit being tripped because of power / fault issues. This may be a possibility for you ... but only if you have the volume turned way up (something you didn't mention). My suggestion is do an internet search but if that doesn't provide some ideas contact Onkyo support and discuss with one of their tech people. Good luck. EDIT, Your symptoms are indeed puzzling. Except for the muting preventing the problem I'd have said its a problem with amp cooling or overdriving the speakers, but muting wouldn't prevent shutdown if that were the case (nor would your kids be able to play games on the same system). The "zap" you describe sounds like some type of short or discharge ... a problem in the power supply? But again, why would muting prevent it? Sorry, I go back to my suggestion to call Onkyo support.
