Someone willing to help me connect a new Samsung DLP w/cable card slot, DirecTV and DVD to my Denon Receiver?
-
It has been a while since I did any of this. I have a new Samsung 50" DLP w/cable card slot. I have both DirecTV and Comcast digital cable (picking up card today) and an older DVD player that I need to upgrade. I need to get these all connected and happy to my Denon 3300 receiver that doesn't have HDMI but does have 3 optical connectors. Currently, I am using my DVD and CD player optically to the receiver. Would someone be willing to tell me how I should connect all the components and with which cables? It is a bit confusing. I am guessing the CD player won't change. I should buy a new HD DVD player and connect it optically as well? Digital cable into the back of the TV? How should I connect the TV to the receiver ... perhaps no different than it is currently? The old TV is a Toshiba projection. Help with all the cabling and which kind of cables to use would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks Jeff

Answer:
As we discussed in other posts, utilize your receiver for audio decoding of your devices with optical cables, and when you update your HD Devices run HDMI directly to the TV or use the receiver's component video switching. If you decide to upgrade the receiver as well there is a unit from Denon called the AVR-2807 that is $800, that has HDMI switching and upconversion, so no matter what you run into the receiver it will send it out via HDMI. Are you recieving DirecTV and Comcast on the same TV? Are you using 2 seperate recievers? What's going in the cable card slot? Here's what I would do: Anything that shows video connect it to your TV via HDMI cable. Take those same components plus anything that plays audio only and connect it to your reciever via optical audio cable. That way you get the video on your TV and your audio from your reciever from all components.

Connect all of your audio (optical or coaxial) from the cd, dvd (or hi-def dvd), and satellite to the receiver. Connect the video from dvd and satellite to tv. Since you are using a cable card, connect the audio out from tv to receiver (hopefully your tv have optical or coaxial output)
