Can a sony hd dvd player play blu-ray?

I have a Sony HDMI dvd player and i would like to know if it can play blu-ray. I know the PS3 by Sony can play blu-ray but my dvd player doesn't say blu-ray on it. It is hd though.

No and forget that bc Sony killed the HDDVD format so all the HDDVD players are now obsolete. Sony made the current and BluRay format that defeated Toshiba's format. So forget that.

No HD-DVD players can not play Blu-ray unless it says it does. Blu-ray uses a blue laser, HD-DVD uses a red laser. There are hybride combinations which can read both blu-ray as HD-DVD, but if you don't have one, your HD-DVD player can only play HD-DVD's and not blu-ray. That your DVD player has HDMI doesn't mean it can play HD-DVD. It's just because new televisions have HDMI and it's easier to connect your dvd player this way.

Sony never made an HD DVD player. Sony was one of the original proponents of Blu-ray discs. Blu-ray won the format war over Toshiba-led HD DVD. Your Sony DVD player is not HD. You need a real Blu-ray player to play Blu-ray discs.
