What is the video format for usb/dvd player?

Which format video does dvd player play?

  • I have an xvid avi video file. But its not playing in my philips dvd player. Please tell me which is the best format to which i should convert the video to , so that it will play on my dvd player.

  • Answer:

All DVD players play MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 video and AC-3 or PCM (eg, WAV) audio... virtually all of them will also play MPEG Layer 2 audio. HOWEVER, it's not guaranteed that you can simply drop an MPEG-2 file on a DVD-R and have your player handle it. Some will, but not all of them. The formal DVD-Video format is what every DVD player plays, and that's something you can generate only using a DVD Authoring program. The video and audio formats are only part of the equation... there's the issue of how things are stored on-disc, and that's what the DVD Authoring program does... it creates a series of "VOB" (Video Object) files, which is a DVD-defined container that stores video, audio, menus and buttons in a standard way understood by all DVD players. If you just want to make your DivX file into a single-movie DVD, try this free program: http://www.videohelp.com/tools/D2MP (you'll need a few other freeware tools, too... see description). If you have a DVD creation tool, you can use that, too. Many PCs come with a very basic one these days; Macs come with iDVD, which does that job. Some DVD players will handle a "DVD Data" disc, which is really just any old DVD-R without special audio or video formatting (the actual format is always the same, but DVD-Video has specific files in specific places). It's popular to support plain old MPEG files, some players also support DivX files, which are essentially the same as your XVID files... they're MPEG-4 and (usually) MPEG Layer 3 audio in an AVI wrapper. But that's not part of the DVD standard, it's up to the manufacturer to support these or not. Some DVD players don't even handle DVD-R or RW discs. That's pretty rare today, but it's possible you have this problem. You can look up your player here to find out what it's known to support: http://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers

For philips dvp 3166: It appears you will need to convert it to DivX. Goto divx.com,download the free trial of the encoder, and convert your xvid file to divx. The divx.com download is a 15 day trial, I understand you can find a free converter on the web, it's called "Dr.Divx", not sure of the legality of downloading it, so I'll leave it to you to investigate. Coincidentally, you may also be interested in this: 1) Open the Setup menu then go to the Preference page. if the player is skipping it then press stop twice and try again. 2) Press 1 3 8 9 3 1 on the keypad of the Remote Control. 3) Options will be available to be selected. 4) Press UP / DOWN key to select the desire Region Code. 5) Press OK. Note:Region 0 = "playable in all regions" - aka "region free" (Also known informally as "All regions") Origiinal Response before Update of question: What model is your DVD player? Standard DVDs are MPEG2, but in a special format for DVDs called Video Object Blocking(VOB). DVDs also have a special directory structure. You will have to get DVD authoring software to make a DVD because there are a lot of interdependent things in the structure. Your DVD player may play other formats, but without a model number, I don't know. Modify your Question with the Model number and I can help you better.

You can try the software which is easy to use and very fast. It can burn DVD from any video formats and has great video edit function to meet all your needs. You can download this software from here: http://www.iphone-tool.com/tool/cucusoft-mpeg-to-dvd-burner.html

Many older players 4 years+, only will decode some formats while todays players pretty much decode everyhting....R (+or -) RW or W (+or-). The players manual will tell you which formats can be decoded.
