How do I get sound out of my surround sound when playing my ps3 or xbox?

  • Ok, I have a 5.1 Samsung blu ray player with surround sound. It is hooked up to my tv with a HDMI cable. My PS3 is also hooked up to my tv with a HDMI cable. My Xbox 360 is hooked up to my tv with the original cables (red, white, green i think). I can't get the sound to come through the surrounds sound. What am I doing wrong? p.s. the tv is a 32" Sony please help

    To get the sound from the PS3 and the Xbox to your surround sound unit you have two options. 1 - take the audio output of the PS3 and the Xbox and route them directly to your surround sound system. This will mean either digital audio or red and white rca connections. Digital audio will get you Dolby digital surround sound while the red and white will get you dolby pro logic II surround sound. 2 - take the digital audio output of your tv and route that to your surround sound system. If you do it that way you will only get two channel stereo. Why? I don't know the exact reason for it but if you read HDTV forums you will discover that anything hooked up to an HDTV via HDMI will only output two channel stereo via the digital audio output of the tv. http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r25175635-Questions-about-HDMI-audio-and-more

You need to get your tv connected to the home theater using an optical cable. Also your XBOX need to be connected to the tv using component (for better video) and optical cable for multi channel sound, your rca red, white (left and right audio signal) and more than likely yellow (video) is a composite cable. Hope this will help you out.

To get surround sound, you'd need to plug the Xbox and PS3 into the BlueRay Player.
