Hooking up a home theatre speaker system without drilling holes in my wall?

Speaker wires for Home Theatre System: Can 16g. mix with 18g?

  • I've used up 100ft of 16g. wire for 3 of the 4 speakers. Can I use 18g wire for the 4th speaker, which is closest to the TV/ home theatre system or should I purchase more 16g wiring. I have some 18g available, but wanted to make sure if it's going to make a difference in sound.

  • Answer:

YES! you can mix You can mix and mix and mix. That guy is a moron for talking about a fire. There is absolutely NO risk of a fire, and with a home theater system, unless your house is acoustically tuned, you're not going to notice a difference unless the subwoofer is the one you're planning on connecting to the 18g, and in that case, you'd have voltage loss (still NO possible chance of a fire) use what you have and save money!

No you have to buy more the 16 gauge wire.Mixing different gauge wire is asking for a possibly overload and fire.

First of all, when it comes to speaker wire, I have never seen or heard of a problem with that from a fire hazard standpoint. However, some audio fans report a slight difference in overall sound when using wire of different thickness. For example, they claim that there is an improvement when going from18g to 16g. O.K. So they stated their case. But,that raises a question. What does the instruction manual for your speakers say about the issue? If you have the manual, follow its lead. Afterall, the manufacturer should know what is best.

To answer this question definitively: You can mix and speaker wire you want. You could run aluminum wiring if you so desired, it would just sound like crap. The sound difference between the two will be ever-so-slight, and possibly slightly noticeable, but i wouldn't worry about it. There's definitely no fire danger or anything like that possible from mixing wire. It won't hurt your stereo components either...it's just a wire. Hope this helps.
