Cheap speaker system with optical input?

If I connect a cable from a coaxial output in my dvd player- to the "digital audio" input in my speaker system

  • ...then will my dvd's audio come out of my speaker system? is that what coaxial is for?

  • Answer:

the digital ouput on your dvd player is a superior way to transfer a signal. the digital out can use either a coax or an optical cable, both equally as good. the sound is not degraded and is highly regarded vs the conventionaly red, white rca jacks. use the digital out whenever possible. if you have a receiver which can decode dolby digital and DTS then you will reap the benefits of these sound codecs and you will be very happy. once you get surround sound you will never go back. some coax (not sure if they all do) cables are directional so make sure to align the arrows on them if they have any. good luck and have fun listening to the new sounds. try matrix reloaded, badass soundtrack!!

Other answers

Yes. The coaxial output on the DVD player is for digital surround sound such as Dolby 5.1 or DTS. If your receiver has a dolby Digital or DTS decoder, you'll be able to listen to surround sound on all of your movies. It's pretty freaking cool.
