How to play stream files?

How do I stream MKV files without Transcoding them?

  • I have a Panasonic SC-BTT370 Blu Ray Home Theatre setup, I have connected it to my home network to be able to access the media server on my PC (Windows 7). The BTT370 can play MKV files without them having to be transcoded to other formats, but I have tried Windows Media Server, PS3 Media Server and TVersity Media server. None of them will just stream an MKV file without trying to convert it to some other format first (on the fly) which means the picture is slow and juddery (or has no sound). Any suggestions for a DLNA media server that will stream MKVs without trying to transcode, or tell me how I can persuade one of the above Servers to stream without transcoding?

Well MKV is a container - not a video format. The video inside the MKV envelope can be an AVI, WMV, MPG, etc. And when you stream it - the entire audio track might come first, followed by the last chapter of the video, etc. The file is NOT ordered in such a way that the first parts of the file contain sound and video in chunks. This is why you cannot stream it.
