How do I get my speakers to work?

How do I get my surround back speakers to work with my sony 7.1 strd720 receiver?

  • I have a Sony 7.1 channel receiver model # STRDG720. I have been trying to get my surround back speakers to work but no such luck. I have 2 front speakers, 1 middle speaker, 2 side surround speakers, and just bought two new surround back speakers. I know the speakers work fine because when I plug put them into any other speaker jack besides surround back they work perfectly. I think I have to change it from broadcasting 5.1 to 7.1 or something. Maybe the surround back decoder is not turned on. I play a blue ray movie to test it and I dont get anything on the surround back speakers when I lug it into the suround back port. Can someone please help me?

  • Answer:

    1) Check your speaker connections. Use the TEST TONE to hear each speaker in your system. (pg 33 of the DG720 manual) If all of your speakers respond, then skip to step 3. If you do not hear the tone from you surr back speaker, recheck your speaker connections and... 2) Check DG720 speaker settings via the system settings (pg. 47- 48: SB SPK setting) 3) Check the audio interconnects: Are you using Optical or coaxial DIGITAL AUDIO connections ... you might need to. Consider adding these even if you use HDMI. 4) Check your DG720 surround sound setup. Select a format that operates 7 channels. Refer to pg 42-44. 5) Check the surround sound program you selected for the current source. Refer to pg 51-53. NOTE which programs utilize 7 channels (i.e. Pro Logic IIx or DTS NEO) Read carefully: While the DG720 can operate 7.1 speaker configurations with Pro logic IIx decoding, it does not decode more recent 7.1ch formats such as DolbyTrueHD or DTS-HD. This should not be a problem, however you may need to make sure your source device is set to output a format this receiver can handle. refer to the manual and dolby website for more info about these formats. 6) Check your source device audio output settings. Check for dolby digital output or Linear PCM output. The DG720 does not support sampling rates higher than 44.1Khz; higher rates are available as an option from certain devices (PS3, Blu-ray)
