How do i get sound on my xbox/monitor?

How do i get cable through surround sound?

  • i have an ln46c600, with the corresponding home theater/dvd player. i also have an xbox. for some reason the only thing i get in surround sound is the dvd, everything else only comes through two of the speakers up front. Ive talked to two techs, both Asian and all they said was it should work but its noooooottttttttt (ps. not being racist, maybe they said something else but i really couldn't understand anything but it should). ive got the fiber optic plugged into the tv and surround sound system, ive actually had to divert the red and white and yellow (analogue) cords into different directions, the come from the direct tv box, and i plug the sound ones into the surround sound and the video into the tv, ive had to do this because it wouldn't even transfer the sound through the tv when it was all plugged into the tv (was only able to get tv speakers) Could it be that im using the analog cables, their all their website said was that some work with analog and some don't (i know very specific but that was what they had online) it also said to get better pictures to use analog, is it a toss up, i either use coaxal, have a worse picture and surround sound or have a better picture using analog but no surround sound? I don't know about anybody else but this is a definite display of 2 steps forward 10 steps back!!!!!

Without knowing your entire setup from looking at it I can only help from what I know, but here goes. HDMI output must be enabled with those type of TVs as far as I know. They hold 5.1 audio like fiber optic cables do except on most older amplifiers you cannot change the source of the surround into a different output. Meaning this..... If your output is toslink(fiber optic cable) that's what needs to go to the reciever. On my Denon 2802, which is much older than that TV.... I need a cable for every input in order for the sound to be surround on everything. The DVD player is fiber optic....but the sat dish/HD reciever is using the analog COAX digital cable. When I switch the Denon to TV....it knows to use the Coax....When I go back to DVD setting on the Denon amp, I must switch back to DVD player or I hear nothing. Now in your case.... I'm guessing you use the TV as the main audio output leaving the TV speakers off. Also, red/white/yellow cable is 2 stereo, 1 video cable....it's not RGB cable(component). So whatever is using that will not be in surround. There is no analog surround cable and the best picture on new tv's is HDMI 1.3 or above...period. That TV has 4 HDMI inputs. In order to get 5.1 audio, you need to use the HDMI cables or fiber optic...that's it. Direct TV would use component or HDMI, I'm not sure...and another fiber optic cable I'm guessing. The home theater DVD player is kinda where things get fuzzy because it's an all in one home theater player and not a seperate box like I have so I don't know it's inputs. Your speakers are probably coming out of the home theater/dvd box so look into how the TV's adjustable output can go into that. It may actually not be possible if it's a limited home theater box.
