I have a Samsung HDTV LN40A550 Samsung DVD/Surround system HT-Z310 And a PS3 Currently I am just using only HDMI cables between the surround sound and PS3 and there is no surround sound at this time. I have included a picture of this setup below. I also have included a picture of a setup I think will work. Could you please check out the picture and tell me why the top picture wont work and why the bottom picture will work. Why cant I get sound by using only HDMI cables? http://img5.imageshack.us/img5/9618/surrondhookup.png

Answer:
From the sound of it (no pun intended) the TV isn't passing the signal through from the PS3 to the amp. The amp doesn't support HDMI in, so you can't connect your PS3 directly into it. The lower picture will work as the amp needs a direct audio in, as it isn't getting it from the HDMI cable. If you are using the TV as the front speakers, the red and white phono puts sound from the amp to the TV, as you can only use one HDMI connection at a time, you can't take the audio from one, and the video from the other. The system should work without the red and white cale though, the PS3 should pass surround sound by optical, and the HDMI cable should still pass L+R audio to the TV.

It is your surround sound in a box system that is the problem. It doesn't have HDMI inputs. As well, even if it did, it would still have trouble doing well, because it doesn't support many of the surround codecs. Some sites say it doesn't even support a few of the old ones. If you want to try and use it anyway, you will have to use an optical cable. It appears that the unit supports optical inputs. Don't pay a fortune for this, though. Get it from Bluejeans Cable. They will get it to you in 2 business days, and it will be way better than you can find in a store, for a way better price. What you will need to do, is connect the optical cable between the receiver and the PS3, and connect the HDMI cable between the TV and the PS3. Then, you will need to go into the PS3 menu, and tell it to set itself up to send video over HDMI. Then, set it up to send audio over it's optical connection. Bingo, you will have whatever surround sound that receiver is capable of generating. I'll tell you up front, though, that it isn't capable of much. In the future, stay away from any "surround sound" solution that comes entirely in one box. That includes Bose. If you aren't buying things separately, you aren't getting the simplicity and performance others enjoy.

I looked up your Samsung home theater online. It looks like it has 2 audio inputs (probably Red & White RCA plugs) and no HDMI or optical inputs. The reason why your top drawing doesnt work is because I can guarantee you that your TV does not have an HDMI output. TV HDMI ports are always inputs. And the HDMI port on your receiver is an input as well. So you are trying to send your sound the wrong direction. The second drawing works because you probably have the RCA plugs on the output of the TV to the input of the receiver. The optical wire and the HDMI wire between the TV and receiver are not doing anything because there are no optical or HDMI inputs on your receiver. Unfortunately the PS3>HDMI>TV>RCA>Receiver is the only way that you can listen to sound from your PS3 unless you buy a new receiver. Sorry Bud :-(

My suggestiong would be to use the Samsung as a source switch. Plug all your devices into the smasung inputs and Saumsung output to the TV.

Your current setup should work fine for tv and dvd (I am assuming you have the input from cable or sat box going to the receiver). You may need to adjust the surround speakers or setup the receiver so that it outputs 5.1 dolby (or dts if it has it). I'd read through the ht-z310 manual and make sure you have all the setting right. For the ps3, you would need an optical (or red and white) output to an input on the receiver.

In the PS3 settings, make sure and choose the LPCM for the audio,s settings, a PS3 cannot bitstream.

Nice pic. It's not working in 1 because your TV doesn't pass surround sound from the PS3 to the surround sound system (SSS). You must send the audio directly from the PS3 to the SSS via optical and the video directly via HDMI from the PS3 to the TV. If you had a receiver that can perform "HDMI switching" you could run one HDMI from the PS3 to the SSS and another HDMI from the SSS to the TV. In that setup all audio and video would go to the SSS and then it would pass the video on to the TV. But you don't have that sort of setup.

1) The PS3 should be directly connected to the receiver, rather than using the TV as a connecter in Hope this works :)
