Why will the volume on my Sony TV not increase?

The volume output is always low on my Sony DVD Player. How can I get the volume to "increase"?

  • When playing DVDs, the volume has to be cranked up to maximum capacity before I can hear dialogue, etc., clearly. Even at the max, the volume is still low. Will new/better cables correct this?

  • Answer:

Cables probably won't make a difference. It sounds like either a TV input problem or a DVD output problem. The only real way to test this is if you connect your DVD to another TV and if the problem still persists then you have your answer. However, if the problem is no longer present when connected to another tv then your tv should be the problem. With that being said, it wouldn't hurt you to try another cable, just to be sure. If you don't have another set of RCAs, then go to best buy or walmart and pick up another set. If this doesn't fix it then you can always return them without a penalty. Remember though that most businesses have a 15 to 30 day return policy so be sure to inquire about it. Good Luck!

Cables most likely have nothing to do with the problem. Please comment on how the DVD is connected and if you are using a HT receiver or connecting it directly to your TV.

Doesn't sound like a cable issue. It is possible that your DVD is set to a digital audio output (whereas you appear to be using stereo, analog connections). You can easily go into the setup and then audio options and set the output to analog/stereo. Another problem could be that some TVs allow uniform volume between different sources - undo that from the TV setup. If these two do not work, please post make and model details of both the TV and the DVD player and I'd be happy to help you specifically. By the way, you also appear to have setup a composite video connection - if you connect the video output via a component connection or even an S-Video, the video quality will improve dramatically. Hope this helps
