Should I buy a Blu-ray or DVD player? What is Blu-ray?
-
My DVD player is playing up. Should I replace it with another DVD player or is now the right time to branch out and try Blu-ray? I honestly don't know the difference. If I buy a Blu-ray player can I watch my DVDs on it or are they entirely incompatible? Any advice at all would be greatly appreciated.

Its main uses are high-definition video and data storage. The disc has the same physical dimensions as a standard DVD or CD. The name Blu-ray Disc is derived from the blue laser (violet colored) used to read and write this type of disc. Because of its shorter wavelength (405 nm), substantially more data can be stored on a Blu-ray Disc than on the DVD format, which uses a red (650 nm) laser. A dual layer Blu-ray Disc can store 50 GB, almost six times the capacity of a double-dual layer DVD (or more than 10 times if single-layer). During the high definition optical disc format war, Blu-ray Disc competed with the HD DVD format. On February 19, 2008, Toshiba — the main company supporting HD DVD — announced it would no longer develop, manufacture, and market HD DVD players and recorders,[2] leading almost all other HD DVD companies to follow suit, effectively ending the format war. Blu-ray Disc was developed by the Blu-ray Disc Association, a group representing consumer electronics, computer hardware, and motion picture production. As of September 20, 2008 more than 850 Blu-ray Disc titles have been released in the United States and more than 500 Blu-ray Disc titles have been released in Japan.[3][4] There are expected to be over 1500 Blu-ray Disc titles released in the United States by the end of 2008. hope this helps, im not buying one, stick with what you know is what i say

Blu-ray - pros: better picture and sound (HD), more features than DVDs, and are the next big thing, works on PS3 - cons: more expensive both player and discs, to fully experience need HD tv Blu-ray doesn't work with regular DVD players so you do need to buy a whole new system. I would get one in a few months after everyone starts buying HD this upcoming winter. Hope that helps for now.

Blu-ray is the 'new' form of DVD. It uses blue light to get the DVDs, so they are just alot more high quality. I'd say yes, get a blu-ray if you can afford to do so. Your old DVDs will still work, but in 10 years time when DVDs are no longer made in normal format like they are now you will already have a player! Bear in mind that blu-ray DVDs look better on HD TV's, but again, in 10 years everyone will probably ahve HD TV so you migt as well.

Blu-Ray is Sony's version of Toshiba's HD-DVD. There was a 'war' at a point in time about which of the high definition DVD format would win. Eventually Sony's Blu-Ray format won & Toshiba dropped their HD-DVD format. Well since Blu-Ray is the only HD-DVD format available now, then yea. I believe that it is backwards compatible with regular DVD.

well, If you have a TV that can display 1080p resolution and if your DVD player has a hdmi cable, its exactly the same as blue ray. So i would say get a good DVD player, they are exactly the same, and the DVD costs less. blue ray is to expensive. I dont care what people say, 1080p HDMI on a dvd player is exactly the same as Blue ray, and the DVD costs less. To be honest, the cheapest blue ray player is a ps3, and if you get one, you can play games and watch films to.
