How do I transfer VHS to DVD?

How can i transfer my VHS Disney movies and the like to DVD or CD-R cheaply?

  • I have a CD burner on my PC. No DVD drive or DVD recorder as of yet. I want to switch my VHS collection over to DVD or possible CD-R that will play on DVD players that play those formats. What equipment do i need? Can i go straight to DVD if i get a DVD recorder/ VHS combo? Will i have copyright issues? Seems silly to have to rebuy the movies i already own.

  • Answer:

There is a device sold at radio shack for about 50 bucks that allows rca connections to be connected to usb. Or purchase a video capture card ( a better way) and install it in your pc. Connect the A/V outs from your vcr to the capture card (it usually comes with softwware) and go for it. Just one small thing particularly from Disney - COPYGUARD If playing your vhs through your computer results in picture that fades in and out, changes color tint or even go to black and white, tape is copyguarded and you will not get a good copy.

Hello.. it is possible to convet videos to DVD or CD-R but honestly its not worth the effort or expense. It is very time consuming and requires very up to date equipment which it sounds like you do not have. The quality would be very poor too. If you have valuable home movies to convert that would be a different matter. It is possible to buy a stand alone device that could do this for you.

Copyguard will be a problem but there are gizmos to get around that, both on computers and stand alone DVD recorders. I don't think there is a way with a combo DVD recorder/VHS machine though because there is no way to put that gizmo in the chain (between the VHS and DVD). DVDs are so reasonably priced though. The Disney films have all been restored and remastered and look absolutely stunning on DVD...soooooo much better than the old VHS tapes. Most are 2 disc special edition with tons of extras. Check out Costco or Walmart or online dealers like www.deepdiscountdvd.com. Personally I wouldn't bother with transferring those old VHS tapes unless you had something that wasn't available on DVD.
