How do I connect my PC to my HDTV?

How should I connect my PC to my HDTV, VGA-VGA or DVI-HDMI?

  • I have an older PC that I want to use as a media server for my HDTV, it has a VGA/DVI/S-Video out on the dedicated graphics card. My Samsung TV has an input labeled PC that is a VGA port but I have an empty HDMI port on the TV as well, although it isn't labeled PC. I could use a DVI to HDMI cable. I am getting about 10 feet in cable to run this setup. Will the VGA-VGA cable produce high enough quality signal for my needs (streaming HD video), or should I go the DVI-HDMI route?

  • Answer:

Ideally the DVI to HDMI connection should work better, this is not always the case though it depends on the flexibility of your PC's video card and also the TV how well it is designed to accept a VGA signal, or DVI signal from a computer...some TV's will cut the picture from the VGA signal making information on the bottom or edges hard to see or not there at all...also flicker can also become a problem along with latency between the sound and the picture...some computer DVI connections do not meet the modern protocol for HDMI and may produce a poor signal or no signal or you may have to reconfigure the computer every time you send a signal. to get anything... so theres a lot of variables to take into consideration and its best to try both methods and see what works best for you....It also depends on how particular you are and what you consider a good picture to be...
