How do I get sound HDMI to DVI?

HDMI to DVI via receiver- is there anywat to get the sound over the HDMI?

  • I have a projection TV with dvi input. It is connected to a Sony STR-DG910 receiver via an HDMI- DVI converter cable. I have a Samsung BD-p1600 connected to the receiver via HDMI. If I disconnect the TV cable I get great sound. If I reconnect the cable, I get great picture, sound. Any ideas on a workaround? Side note: I had a similar problem with my digital cable box but, if I went into it's setup menu and selected "audio pass through" it worked fine, but I noticed no such menu on the Blu Ray.

  • Answer:

The Sony STR-DG910 has "pass through" HDMI ... which means it passes the video only. In other words it doesn't strip off the audio and process it and in effect acts as a switch for video input. You can ... as you found ... get either audio or video pass through, but not both. The only way to get video to the TV and audio is to run the audio via optical or coax digital cables from the source (cablebox, Blu-ray player) to the receiver. The only problem then is you can't get more than DD 5.1 / DTS 5.1 (no advanced Blu-ray audio formats ... which require HDMI (or multichannel analog)). Personally I don't think that is a problem unless you have a 7.1 setup with great speakers AND have good hearing. For most people DD/DTS is fine ... it's the improved video that matters most.
