Do DVDs from the UK work on DVD players in the US?

Do USA DVDs work on Uk DVD players?

  • We are going to New York and my little girl might see a DVD that she wants that you can't get over here. But I don' want her to spend her hard earned money on a DVD which won't work on our DVD player. Our DVD player is a Samsung one. We need to know quick! We are leaving in 2 days. Thanks!

  • Answer:

Probably not. The DVD world is split into 7 regions (USA being 1, Europe 2 etc etc) so unless your DVD player is multi-region it is highly unlikely to work over here.

Straight out of the box, no. It won't play DVD's purchased from the states. As others have stated, DVD's are region coded and as the UK and US are different your unit won't play those discs. Despite this, most DVD Players can be made multi-region by entering the appropriate code. Most of these codes are readily available on the internet and does not involve you doing anything other than pressing the buttons on your remote. This is because manufacturers make the units multi-region to cut down on manufacturing costs. It is not until the unit is due for shipping is the appropriate region code applied. I have done this on a number of players and each plays multi-region with no difficulty.

I purchased some dvds from the USA and I did not realise that they were region 1 and the UK is region 2. The dvds did not work on my dvd player and so I sent the dvds to a friend in the USA to use. As long as the dvd player in the UK can take region 1 then it would be alright to buy them. Have a look at the instruction book for your dvd player and it will tell you if it will play region 1 dvds, mine did tell say that I could not use any other dvds but region 2. I took my region 1 dvds to my friend's home and they did not work on her dvd player either but they did work on her computer. When I tried them on my laptop a pop up screen told me I could switch to region 1 to watch the dvd but I could only do this a certain amount of times, so as I said I sent the dvds to my friend in the USA. So my advice is check your instructions that came with the dvd player and when in doubt do not buy the dvds in New York, unless there is a guarantee that they will play on any dvd in the world, as here in the UK were are region 2.

Multi region dvds play region 1 and region 2 (USA & UK) so YES....

Probably not. Most DVDs are region-coded and won't work in a foreign country. On the other hand, CDs work on any kind of CD player in the world.

Not unless you have a multi-region player. If you don't get the full product name of your player and google "[player name] region unlock". I did this and was able to get a simple 4 digit code to type on my remote which unlocked my player (an oldish Philips Home Theatre System). Not all DVD players can be unlocked this easily though.

Shelia A has got it, depending on how new your player is this site might be able to help you make your DVD player "Region Free" http://www.dvdcodes.net/newCodesAZ/codesS/Samsung/index.php
