What is the best brand of speakers?

What are the best brand for vintage speakers?

  • I'm looking for a nice pair of vintage speakers under $500, I found many but not sure what brand to look into. I would prefer something made of solid wood and sound quality that has moderate bass but more natural clear mid range and high range sounds, a sound that fills the room. What is your opinion or personal preference? also how about these brands, Yamaha, JBL, Klipsch, Polk Audio, KLH, Infinity IRS, Totem, B&W Nautilus

  • Answer:

As with any speaker new or vintage they all have vastly different sounds, so ultimately you have to choose the speakers that sound best to your ears, you have to go and listen to them. You cant go by spec's or reviews its really something you have to go listen to. Even these manufactures of speakers have vastly different sound quality's so what I might like you may not. One thing is for certain, the best place to buy a good pair or home theater set of speakers would be to go to your local independent high end audio video store. As they carry the better brands of speakers and equipment. Also its very important to buy the right type of speakers for how the system will be used. Is this a music system or home theater system or both ? Choosing the right speakers is critical to get the best sound. Home theater speakers are typically really bad for listening to music. They are designed completely differently and are not designed with reproducing music at the highest fidelity, but more to give you directional sounds, (which is bad for music) and to handle the demands of crashes and explosions. Some of the brands you mentioned in my opinion are ok, Totem and B&W but again it depends on the type of system you want. Most people are not familiar with the really high quality brands of speakers as again they can only be purchased at your local high end audio video stores. So choose the right speakers for the type of system you really are wanting. Because you did not specify the type of system your wanting it would be hard to recommend the right speakers for your needs, not to mention how you like things to sound. The brands that you list are all good, other than for Yamaha (Most electronics companies don't make very good speakers, so Yahama, Sony, etc., aren't great speakers.). But, why would you want what would be obsolete speakers, when good brand modern speakers are far better in both quality AND technology ? I'd take my Infinity Beta 50s over any similar Infinity products from the 80s. Consider, as well, that an old speaker set will either need rebuilding, which will cost $$$, or will already have had this done, in which case a seller will be asking $$$ because they've paid that out. The foam and driver parts do age, and are what fail in a speaker most often. If you want a good deal, then look to more recent vintage speakers being sold used. Or, look for some deals on new speakers. For an example, you can get Polk Monitor 70s floorstanding speakers, in cherry colour, list priced at $460 each for $225 each right now, through Amaz*n.

Of the ones you mentioned the Totem and B & W will sound the best, actually with Bowers and Wilkins its pretty hard to go wrong most of their vintage speakers sound really good....the other brands have both good and bad sounding speakers, so if you don't know then; B & W is going to be your best bet...the Nautilus line is outstanding....and if you can get a pair for less than $500 I would pick them up quick....another brand you might try is Boston Acoustics, they have some really good attractive speakers for reasonable prices on the vintage speaker market...One of the better sounding vintage speakers is the Boston Acoustics A150 some have an Oak Veneer finish with light color grill and these would be an exceptional buy if you could find a pair....also anything in the VR line would be good....

JBL, Klipsch, Infinity and B&W would be a good choice. JBL has been around for many years and most used in recording studios, movie theater and professional around the world. I personally use JBL, Klipsch and Infinity. Demo them first with your own source of music and listen to one song on each speakers. Let your own ears be the final judge. Hope this will help you out.
