How do I connect a dvd home system to a receiver?

7.2 channel receiver, Home theatre and DVD player?

  • I dont have much idea about home theater receivers. I would like to buy a A/V Receiver (7.2 Channels) and a 7.1 channel home theater system. please suggest me a few brands/models for these systems.. price range: $600 max channel: 7.2 type: ordinary( no Blu-Ray), surround, video quality doesn matter but the audio needs to be good Now heres my qn.. can receivers act as players? i mean do i need to have a dvd player too? or is it in built in a receiver? if i need one, then, heres my next question.. the receiver is 7.2 channeled and if i connect that to a 5.1 channel dvd player, 'll i get 7.1 channel surround? how 'll the connectivity be? a 5.1 channel dvd player to 7.2 receiver to 7.1 home theater system.. please help.. thanks..

    Typically, all movies now only play up to 5.1 normally. Extra speakers is just extended sound that you get from 5.1. Also, the only way to get 7.1 or 7.2 sound is through HDMI only, you cannot use optical for these sound formats. Receivers usually DO NOT have players built in them if you want a AV Receiver, if you want a home theatre in a box then they can come built in but if you can afford it, do not go this route. Get a bluray player that can decode DTS-MA and Dolby Digital HD sound, usually all blurays can do this though. Im not entirely sure what to suggest as I do not have expertise in buying equipment, but 600 will probly not be enough. Your looking more around $1000 with having to buy speakers as well. A good receiver is Yamaha or Onkyo and they can run you around $300-400
